Feminist Frequency on race and casting for The Hunger Games

I’m going to diverge on a tangent that may reveal my own caucasian ignorance.  

This particular issue has come up multiple times when I’ve been discussing The Hunger Games film with friends and family, and every time I nod thoughtfully without comment.

Because truthfully… I don’t think I know what an olive skin tone is supposed to look like.  I never noticed that book Katniss’ description didn’t match the actress I’d seen on movie posters.

So I asked the Google.

It looks like olive skin covers a wide range - I see women in these results who identify as latina, black, and caucasian.  (Is there a more anthropologically correct word for either latina or black?  My caucasian ignorance is showing again!)  
((Oh - and I find it interesting that not a single man shows up in these results until page 3.))

I don’t have much of a concluding point to this… Just that I now feel better informed.  And that I better understand the bogusness of that casting call.
